On Thursday, October 20, at 6:30pm in Morton Hall 240, the Global Studies Program will host an informational session for study abroad. All topics concerning study abroad will be discussed. In particular, the session will focus on the following faculty-led study abroad opportunities:

FL 201S/301S/FL 499S Intensive Spanish in Salamanca, Spain
NUR 418/518 Global Health, International Study in London

In addition, we will discuss the options for intensive German in Duesseldorf, Germany, art and art history in Cortona, Italy, and the various programs available through the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC).

Free Lecture on the Architectural Heritage of the Berlin Wall and Peenemünde

Uta Mense of the Technical University of Cottbus in Germany will give a public lecture entitled "The Berlin Wall and Peenemünde: Traces of the Modern Heritage of 20th-Century Germany." Ms. Mense will discuss how modern GIS-based technology can help identify the remains of these sites and help us better understand their historical significance.

The talk will be on Tuesday, February 8th, at 7:30pm in Roberts Hall 419.

Ms. Mense is from Germany and previously worked as an architect in the Netherlands and Germany. She has completed the postgraduate master program, UNESCO "World Heritage Studies," and is now working as a project-manager for EU-funded intercultural projects and conducting research on the heritage of the space race, focusing on the United States, Russia/Kazakhstan, as well as its origins in Germany.

This Spring! GS 400: Europe - Culture, Society, Politics

The name “European Union” suggests a union of European states, cultures, and identities. In many ways, this has occurred. The EU now has 27 members, 16 of which have introduced the common currency, the Euro. EU enthusiasts speak of a “Europeanization” and the development of a postnational “European identity” that will bring Europeans of different languages, faiths, and habits together under a common idea of “Europe.” Yet, if we go beyond the political and economic structures that have produced common policies in multiple areas of politics, economics, and daily life, we can identify tensions and fissures in this idea of “Europe.” Conflicts between old and new members of the EU, between East and West, between North and South, between pro- and anti-immigration voices, and between advocates and opponents of EU membership for Turkey all complicate the vision of an ever-unifying Europe. In this seminar, we will read, discuss, and view various articulations of “Europe.” We will explore the complexities of cultures and identities in Europe. We will also critically approach various recent appraisals of Europe and the European Union project. Students at junior level or above from ANY major are eligible to take this course. Questions? Congratulations to Mary Crouch and Nathan List

Mary Crouch, a December 2010 graduate of UAHuntsville (major in Spanish and minor in Global Studies), has received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Colombia. As a Fulbright fellow, Mary will spend the 2010-2011 academic year in Colombia helping to teach English to Colombian high school students.

Nathan List has been chosen as the 2009-2010 Outstanding Student in Global Studies. Nathan is majoring in political science and has completed the requirements for the Global Studies cognate.

Informational Meeting for Fulbright Program

The Fulbright is a competitive program that offers academic-year length fellowships for research, creative work, and teaching English in 140 countries around the world.

Study in Romania this Summer!

You can study in Romania this summer (June 13-26, 2010) and earn 6 UAH credits (MGT 470/490 for undergraduates and MGT 570/650 for graduates). This course, led by Dr. Jim McCollum and co-sponsored by the Romanian-American University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, explores international trade and policies, the global economy, European monetary policy, globalization, international business management, project management and organizational behavior in the setting of Romania. Romania joined the European Union on January 1, 2007, and offers numerous opportunities to explore the ramifications of EU expansion in eastern Europe.

UAHuntsville students will join Romanian managers and undergraduate and graduate students in the class. Assignments will include negotiations in teams, proposal writing in teams, executing project management in teams, project opportunities and foreign trade opportunities between the U.S., Romania, and others.

For 2010, the Global Studies Program will once again offer opportunities via the USAC Consortium (summer, semester, and academic-year programs) as well as the opportunity to study German for four weeks in Düsseldorf, Germany or art and art history in Cortona, Italy.

Photography Show for UAH Students Abroad

In May 2009, 10 students traveled to England to study the historical development of photography with Jose Betancourt, assistant professor of photography at UAHuntsville. The trip was part of the course ARS 353/453 Photography, Experimental and Historical Processes in England. The group has documented their trip and experiences in photographs and will show their work beginning Tuesday, June 23rd in Union Grove Gallery on the UAHuntsville campus. The opening reception begins at 3pm and runs until 6pm. All are welcome to attend.

The show runs through July 23.

Jennifer Staton, a major in history with a a minor in English at UAHuntsville, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Germany in 2009-2010. The Fulbright Program is highly selective, and Jennifer's accomplishment reflects her exceptional academic record. She will serve as a teaching assistant in a German high school, helping instructors there teach English. She will also be able to pursue her interest in early modern history as she explores German cities and museums.

Lauren Pegues, a student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, has received a scholarship from the Critical Languages Scholarship Program to study Arabic this summer. This very selective program is sponsored by the United States Department of State and Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers(CAORC).

The CLS Program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to increase the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.

Wine and Auction Benefit for the North Alabama Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, Saturday November 15

The Global Studies Program is pleased to support the North Alabama Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, which has brought five to six distinguished scholars and archaeologists to UAH to share their research insights every year for the past decade.

We are pleased to announce AIA's upcoming Wine Tasting and Silent Auction benefit.
The benefit will be on November 15 at the Lowe House in historic Twickenham. The Lowe House is the elegant home of UAH president David Williams. We will sample fine wines from Spain, Argentina, and Chile with the guidance of sommelier Tami Herrington of Pinnacle Imports who will be talking about the history of these wines and their vineyards as well as describing the character of the individual wines. Archaeologist Dr. Tom Sever will give a brief talk on his current research on the Maya. We have a number of fine items in our auction. Enjoy the company of others interested in archaeology.

Critical Languages Scholarship Program

The Critical Languages Languages Scholarship Program provides scholarships for intensive study of several languages: Arabic, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Turkish and Urdu, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Azerbaijani, and Russian).

In Memory of Sarah Chapman

Sarah Chapman, an outstanding student and person, died on Monday, September 15, 2008. Sarah went to Germany this May as part of the course “Munich, Nuremberg, and Berlin: Legacies of the Third Reich.” The picture above is Sarah in Munich at Odeonsplatz.

We were so impressed by Sarah. She was intelligent and adventurous, and her enthusiasm was infectious. She was not deterred by anything or anyone. She wanted to see Neuschwanstein, and she did. She wanted to “Facebook friend” one of the tour guides in Nuremberg, and she did. She wanted to see the ballet in Berlin, and she did. When we saw her the next morning, she told us: “Guess what I did last night?! I went to the ballet! It was amazing!”

We thank Sarah for these wonderful memories.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

Scholarship to Study German in Germany this Summer!

Once again, students can apply for the Hundred Fold Stipend to study in Germany next summer. Here is the announcement and the requirements for the application:

The Hundredfold Stipend
For Study Abroad
As a Contribution to World Peace
2008-09

One UAH student will receive tuition and living expenses (not to exceed $1500 and not to include transatlantic travel) for individualized study at the Institute for Intercultural Communication in Düsseldorf, Germany (http://www.iik-duesseldorf.de/english/). The winning candidate may be a major in any field in any college at UAH. The recipient should have completed FL102-G prior to arrival in Düsseldorf.

Candidates for the award should submit the following to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts by December 2: a personal statement explaining your long-term goals and how this summer program fits into that long-range plan (two pages maximum); letters of recommendation from two UAH faculty members, of whom one should be in Foreign Languages. If you have some personal project on which you would like the feedback of a specialist, if one can be located who wishes to make time for you, describe the project (one page maximum). If we cannot locate a specialist in your preferred field, we will ask you for a second or third preference, if you win the award. No such special project is necessary at all, and, in any case, is simply for general enrichment in your field. Your Düsseldorf experience may not be construed as part of accredited coursework in any field other than German.

With the research project option, students can consult with an expert in virtually any field. Often, interviews in English can be arranged. These two or three one-hour consultation sessions, combined with the intensive language study in German, can provide you with a variety of opportunities to explore cross-cultural aspects of your chosen field of study.

In addition to having a generally strong record, the winning candidate will be the one who seems most likely to help make the world a safer and healthier place. The recipient of the Hundredfold Stipend should submit a short description and evaluation of the experience within a month of its completion.

The stipend is open to students of any, or of no particular, faith. It is based on a parable in Matthew 13:8: Some seed fell on good soil where it bore fruit a hundredfold.

Study Global Studies at UAH!

The Global Studies Program at UAH offers several ways to explore the rich variety and complexity of global issues from multiple perspectives.

Each fall, students can take the course Global Studies 200, "Global Systems and Cultures." This course is a multi- and interdisciplinary exploration of global issues and the processes associated with the mobility of people, capital, cultures, materials, and ideas. The course also features guest lectures by UAH faculty members from a variety of disciplines, including history, political science, sociology, art history, psychology, and philosophy. Topics include the history of global trade, global economic development, immigration, culture and globalization, cross-cultural communication, and gender, race, and ethnicity in a global context.

Dr. Allman is a distinguished historian of West Africa. Her research examines issues of nation and national identity, gender and colonialism, fashion and the politics of clothing, and the modernity of indigenous belief systems. She has written The Quills of the Porcupine: Asante Nationalism in an Emergent Ghana, 1954-1957 (1993) and co-written TONGNAAB: The History of a West African God (2005) and "I Will Not Eat Stone": A Women’s History of Colonial Asante (2000). She has also edited several volumes and published over 25 articles. She has served as the co-editor of the Journal of Women’s History and the co-editor of two award-winning book series, The Social History of Africa series and New African Histories. Dr. Allman has also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora and for the African Studies Association. Dr. Allman has also won numerous teaching awards and research grants.

Management Courses in Romania, June 2008!

From June 13 to 28, 2008, UAH students have the opportunity to travel to Romania and earn earn 6 undergraduate or graduate credit (MGT 470/490 for undergraduates, or MGT 570/650 (6 Hours) for graduates). Note: non-business majors can participate in this course!

This course, cosponsored by Romanian-American University and UAH, explores the world economy, international trade and policies, European monetary policy, globalization, international business management, project management, and organizational behavior in the setting of Romania, an Eastern European country that joined European Union on January 1, 2007. UAH students participating in the class will be joined by Romanian managers as well as undergraduea and graduate students. The material to be covered will include negotiations in teams, proposal writing in teams, executing project management in teams, project opportunities and foreign trade opportunities between the U.S. and Romania, and others.

Instructors for the course will be Dr Kent Zimmerman and Dr. James K. McCollum from UAH as well as Dr. Florin Bonciu, Dr. Dumitru Miron, Dr. Mihai Sebea, and Dr. Valeriu Potecea from the Romanian-American University.

The Romanian-American University will provide instructors, ground transportation to and from the airport and in and around Bucharest; a weekend trip to Bran (Dracula’s) Castle, Rasnov Fortress, the Medieval City of Brasov, plus meals, lodging, and classroom facilities for 16 days.

Estimated expenses:

Romanian-American University fee: 800 Euros (approximately $1,200)

UAH graduate or undergraduate tuition (6 credits)

Roundtrip airfare (arranged individually by students)

Passport application fees
Discretionary funds for souvenirs, snacks, meals on evening forays in Bucharest

Aerospace Engineering in Germany! UPDATE

This May, UAH aerospace engineering students will once again have the opportunity to study in Germany. From May 10-25, 2008, students will be able to tour facilities of the German Aerospace Agency and the European Space Agency and visit other sites associated with the history of aerospace engineering. The course will be based in Cologne, Germany, the fourth-largest city in Germany and located on the beautiful Rhine river. The class will also visit Berlin along with several other German cities.

Dr. Brian Landrum will be the faculty member in charge of the group.

UPDATE: The maximum enrollment for the course is 10. If you want to participate, please bring a $200 deposit to the office of Dr. David Johnson (Morton 253). Deposits can be paid by check (made out to UAH) or by credit card.

The remaining payment of $1900 will be due Friday, March 14, 2008. This payment includes all lodging in Germany, all ground transportation in Germany, excursions, museum entrance fees, and meals (including a welcome and farewell dinner).

Study Spanish in Guanajuato, Mexico!

Spaces are still available for the intensive Spanish courses in Guanajuato, Mexico from May 3-18, 2008. Students make take FL 200S Intermediate Spanish, FL 301S Spanish for Conversation, or FL 499S Advanced Spanish Conversation. Each course is 3 credit hours.

This is an excellent opportunity to improve your Spanish and experience Mexico.

Advanced students may also combine their foreign language internship with a class in Guanajuato.

2 $1000 Stipends for Study in Düsseldorf, Germany!

Two UAH students per year will receive tuition and living expenses (not to exceed $1000 apiece and not to include transatlantic travel) for individualized study at the Institute for International Communication in Düsseldorf, Germany (http://www.iik-duesseldorf.de/english/). One stipend is reserved for a student majoring in Foreign Languages, and one for a student with any other major from any college at UAH. Recipients should have completed FL102-G prior to arrival in Düsseldorf.

The dates for the four-week course in Düsseldorf are June 2-27, 2008.

In addition to studying German in Düsseldorf, students may also pursue a research project pertaining to academic and/or professional goals.

Candidates for the awards should submit the following to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts by December 1: a personal statement explaining your long-term goals and how this summer program fits into that long-range plan (two pages maximum); letters of recommendation from two UAH faculty members, of whom one should be in Foreign Languages. If you have some personal project on which you would like the feedback of a specialist, if one can be located who wishes to make time for you, describe the project (one page maximum). If we cannot locate a specialist in your preferred field, we will ask you for a second or third preference, if you win the award. No such special project is necessary at all, if you simply want to begin or continue the study of German. Recipients should submit a short description and evaluation of the experience within a month of its completion.

Study Abroad Opportunity in Germany

Dr. Molly Johnson of the history department will take students to Germany in May 2008 as part of the course: GS 199/HY 399 "Munich, Nuremberg, Berlin: Legacies of the Third Reich." The course will explore three cities integral to the Nazi movement in Germany: Munich, Nuremberg, and Berlin. Munich was the birthplace of Nazism and was celebrated by the Nazis as the “Capital of the Movement.” Nuremberg, site of the Nazi Party’s annual rallies, became synonymous with the “aestheticization of politics” as a strategy to attain the support of the masses, as exemplified in Leni Riefenstahl’s film “Triumph of the Will.” Once in power, Hitler and the Nazis transformed the national capital of Berlin, long known as a bastion of socialism, communism, and modernism, into their new base, from which they built a racial state and launched an ultimately unsuccessful quest for the domination of Europe. The course will begin with instruction at UAH during the spring semester and end with a two-week trip to Munich, Nuremberg, and Berlin, Germany in May. 87 UAH students study abroad in 2007!

This summer, 87 UAH students participated in a variety of study abroad courses and programs. 18 aerospace engineering students spent two weeks in Germany and France in May visiting testing and historical sites. Over 30 students took intensive Spanish courses in Guanajuato, Mexico. 11 Nursing students studied the British health care system in London. Rome was the destination for 16 students who explored the history of the "eternal city." 5 students traveled to India for three weeks and learned about the country from a variety of perspectives. UAH students also studied German in Düsseldorf and Irish Music and Literature in Galway, Ireland. For 2008, the Global Studies Program is helping facilitate faculty-led courses and other study abroad opportunities to a variety of destinations.
